gerhard eckel studied musicology at the vienna university, composition of electronic music with dieter kaufmann and sound engineering at the hochschule für musik und darstellende kunst. he is interested in questions of science/technology and arts in the field of music and new media and works both as a scientist as well as a composer. he spent seven years at IRCAM in paris. his interest in immersive visualisation systems used as music composition and listening environments directed him towards the fraunhofer institute for media communication, at which he works in the competence center virtual environments since six years. the scientific focus of his current work addresses the modelling and synthesis of auditory components for augmented environments, while his artistic projects are mainly sound and music installations both in real space as well as in virtual space. since 2001 he directs the EU-project LISTEN, which aims at the auditory augmentation of everyday environments. in the past gerhard eckel was invited as a guest composer by the institut voor sonologie of the utrecht university, the banff centre for the arts, canada, and the ZKM - zentrum für kunst und medientechnologie karlsruhe. during winter term 2001/02 he was invited by the studio for electronic musics of the berlin technical university to hold the DAAD guest professorship »edgar varèse«.

was born in 1978. he spent one year in poland. studies musicology, communication studies, and technical acoustics. interest for the inner live of technical equipment and ideas, motivated by the play of instruments and with technical things. fascinated by the intersection of arts and technologies, especially in the context of music. likes bats.

lives and works in berlin. first contact with music in the age of nine through instrumental lessons. works in the field of sound design and computer aided composition of electronic and electroacoustic music since 1998. in 2001, he was engaged as a tutor at the electronic studio of the berlin technical university. he is interested in the technical as well as in the artistic aspect of music and new media.

in 2000 he developed together with sascha kranz and daniel plewe the interactive sound installation "korkensche kommunikationsinterpolation" at klangwerkstatt 2000, berlin. 2001 he worked with the composer jonathan bepler as his assistant for the score of matthew barney: cremaster 3. artistic assistent of robin minard since 2003. first debut of his eight-channel tape composition "emotionsparameter" at ultraschall-festival 2003, berlin.

was born in berlin. since the early days of childhood especially interested in all things having knobs or keys (gas stove, piano, typewriter). got first "?syntax error" in 1987 from a commodore 64, accompanied by blisters caused by a soldering iron. studies in musicology, philosophy and computer science in berlin. generally interested in arts and technologies, especially for the intersection between music and electronics, programming languages, sound synthesis, and their effects on the mode of working.

workshop for building a do-it-yourself midi controller box at the berlin technical university in 2001. 2002-2003 involved with the development of gerhard eckel's listen project. since 2003 porting and further development of foo, a highly abstracted sound synthesis and composition framework (http://foo.rumori.de).
